New York City Council has passed legislation to add a category X to birth certificates so parents can allow their children the option to choose the sex they identify as and have it registered on their birth certificates without clearance from a doctor or health care provider.
“Today is a historic day for New York in its role as a worldwide champion for inclusivity and equality.” City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, who introduced the legislation said in a statement.
The new ruling is said to become effective on January 1, 2019.
