As the Yes v No debate continues in Australian around the postal survey on same-sex marriage, former world No.1 tennis player turned Christian minister Margaret Court has claimed, during a speech Perth Rotary Club, that Christmas will be cancelled if Australia legalises same-sex marriage.
“They want marriage, because they want to destroy it,” The West Australian newspaper reported. ”There will be no Mother’s Day, there will be no Father’s Day, there will be no Easter, there will be no Christmas.”
In context, Court warned that the legalisation of same-sex marriage would “affect freedom of speech”. A common argument from the ‘vote no’ side that tries to scare people into thinking they could lose something traditional, like Christmas, if two men or two women were allowed to marry.
The argument has no legitimate precedent as none of 24 countries across the world that have legalised same-sex marriage have cancelled Christmas .
