Mother Charged With The Murder Of Her Son Just Weeks After He Came Out As Gay

The mother of a 10-year-old Anthony Avalos, who is said to have come out as gay weeks before his death, has been arrested and charged with his murder.

A press release from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office revealed that 28-year-old Heather Maxine Barron was charged with one count of murder and one count of torture for the death of her son.

Earlier in the week Barron’s boyfriend, Kareem Leiva, 32, was arrested and charged with Anthony’s murder and torture.

A Facebook group set up in honour of Anthony celebrated the arrest of Barron.

The page also announced that the lead prosecutor for Anthony’s case is Jon Hatami, he was the lead prosecutor in the case for the death of Gabriel Fernandez.

If convicted as charged, Barron faces a possible maximum sentence of 22 years to life in state prison, while Leiva faces 32 years to life in prison.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide and Special Victims bureaus.

Anthony died on June 21 after being found unresponsive a day earlier at his family’s apartment. His mother initially told police he was injured in a fall.
