Lil Nas X has been breaking records and breaking glass ceilings with his raunchy, controversial shows, and his Montero (Call Me By Your Name) performance at the Black Entertainment Television Awards was no exception. After delivering stunning choreography against the backdrop of an Egyptian themed stage, the 22-year-old singer finished the performance by turning to one of his male back-up dancers and kissing him, reports Entertainment Weekly.

Draped in a gold lap-lap that left little to the imagination, the historic performance at the BET Awards showcased Lil Nas X’s genre-bending, controversial style, which has defined the singer’s career since coming out as a gay man in June, 2019.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the performance was an homage to Michael Jackson’s 1991 Remember The Time, with with a Sphinx head and staircase set. Nas even injected the chorus of Jackson’s song into the end of his set.

Lil Nas X has once again delivered a stellar performance and defied societal norms by choosing to carve his own path in the music industry. The singer’s musical career has been punctuated with decisions that break down the barriers that have traditionally blocked LGBTQIA+ performers.
