Instant Queer Favourite “Everything Everywhere All At Once” Sweeps Oscar Nominations
Everything Everywhere All At Once (EEAAO) starring Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu has become an instant cult classic and one of the biggest movie hits of 2022. Now it has also picked up 11 Oscar nominations; one for nearly every major category, reports USA Today.
AN EMOTIONAL GUT-PUNCH DESIGNED FOR QUEER POC
Everything Everywhere All At Once is an absurdist film that centres around Evelyn (played by Yeoh) who owns a laundromat with husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan). The multiversal flick traverses space and time as Evelyn faces her lesbian daughter Joy/Jobu Topaki (Stephanie Hsu).
The whacky film is separated into three parts; Everything, Everywhere and All At Once. Each part deepens our understanding of the complicated family dynamics between Evelyn, Joy and Waymond and navigates a queer POC narrative via Salvador Dalí-like visuals.
The story at its heart is about an Asian mother and daughter who struggle to communicate across generational lines. Queer POC understand this struggle inherently and despite the film’s sci-fi origins, it feels ultimately very realistic.
After the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences announced the nominations for the 95th annual awards, it appears that EEAAO leads the charge with 11 total nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress (2), Best Supporting Actor, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Costume design, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score and Best Original Song, reports USA Today.
