Indonesia Close To Criminalising Gay Sex

Indonesia is close outlawing all sex outside marriage, including criminalising consenting gay sex between adults in private.

The law changes are currently being considered by the country’s parliament and, if passed, would see a convicted individual serve a prison sentence of up to five years.

According to LGBT activists, the bill could pass as soon as Valentines Day, and has support from all 10 of the country’s main political parties.

Secretary general of the United Development Party (Partai Persatuan Pembangunan or PPP), Arsul Sani, who helped draw up the bill explained: “It applies to people of the same gender who have sex, which is basically a forbidden act,” he said. “It’s considered the same as adultery, where men and women having sex outside marriage can be considered a crime.”

The Indonesian LGBT community has long suffered at the hands of the law and an “anti-LGBT task force” that was created in 2017 to investigate LGBT activity in the Muslim-majority country. The task force was reported to have conducted raids on gay saunas and sex parties that lead to the arrest of gay and bisexual men. In 2017, two men were publicly caned for having gay sex.

MOre recently, police in Indonesia publicly shamed 12 transgender women in the province of Aceh by forcing them to shave their long hair and dress in men’s clothing.

The province’s police chief, Untung Sangaji, referred to the women as a “disease”. He said, the disease “is spreading. It’s inhumane…  [we can’t] tolerate these sissy garbages”.
