Get the rainbow glitter ready, lesbian couple Lauren Price, 31 and Amy Laker, 29 will be the first same-sex couple to officially marry under the recently passed same-sex marriage law.
According to the Daily Mail, the couple were granted a shortening of their intention to marriage on financial grounds – because Ms Price’s family had already paid to come from Wales for their civil ceremony before gay marriage was legalised.
Births, Deaths and Marriages granted the couple an exemption on the standard 30 day notice period citing the travel of close relative and preparation clause.
The couple have been planning their big day for more than a year, when they realised their wedding would be legally recognised Ms Laker broke down in tears.
The couple had appealed to Births, Deaths & Marriages NSW to have their notice of intention to marry period slashed from 30 days to just one week.
“We went in there and made our case, the officials left the room to make their decision – it was the longest ten minutes of our lives – our hands were so sweaty.
“When she came back in and said she had good news I just started crying.”
