Only in Australia could a small group of people turn a negative into a positive and then into a viral movement, as is the case with the very cool movement called ‘Drag Mailbox Day’.
Listed as this Saturday, August 26, the group’s Facebook page is calling on Australians to ‘Zoozsh your mailbox for marriage equality! A simple and beautiful way to promote love and kindness.’
The movement has shared a series of pictures where people have painted their mailboxes in bright rainbow colours in support of the #YES vote ahead of the same-sex marriage equality postal vote.
DNA spoke with event organiser, Kate Crumpet about how the idea for Drag Mailbox came about:
“I’m a spontaneous person. I usually wake up in the morning with no idea how the day will turn out and more often than not, ridiculous things happen. That’s really how Drag Mailbox came about.”
Along with her daughter, River, Kate started “dragging” their mailbox.
“ River loves RuPaul’s drag race and is pretty handy with a rhinestone. It looked amazing! When we were finished, River said to me ’Mum, is everyone else decorating their Mailboxes? I think everyone in Australia should so that gay people can get married. It’s stupid that gay people can’t get married’”.
With that, Kate had a lightbulb moment.
“15 minutes later I had a Facebook Page set up and started sending it to every person and group I could think of! Within a day, I had generated a lot of interest.”
