As of midnight, tonight LGBT couples who married overseas will legally be married under Australian law and this morning the 30-day ‘Notice of Intended Marriage forms have been updated to reflect the new law to allow same-sex couples the right to marry.

“It is now part of Australian law,” Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said after he and Attorney-General George Brandis visited the Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove who gave the bill Royal Assent.

The form has a new heading Party 1 and Party 2 replacing Bridegroom and Bride, with a “Description of party” section offering three options: “groom”, “bride” and “partner”.

The gender boxes have also been updates “male”, “female” and “x” – which is described as “indeterminate, intersex or unspecified”.
