Australian Parliament Passes Same-Sex Marriage

Openly gay Minister Tim Wilson hugs Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull after the marriage bill is passed by the house

After hundreds of hours of debate and a clear mandate from the Australian people, the House of Representatives has passed the Dean Smith bill to change the marriage act to include same-sex couples.

The bill was passed without amendments, after many attempts to railroad the process, and will now go to the Governor General who will ratify the law to legalises same-sex marriage.

This would ensure Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will have kept his promise to the Australian people that the government would legalise same-sex marriage before Christmas.
