Alan Cumming Talks To DNA About Directing The Adelaide Cabaret Festival

ALAN CUMMING AT CLUB CUMMING EAST VILLAGE NYC (clubcummingnyc. com)

Alan Cumming has carved a name for himself as a screen and stage actor and has been nominated for three Emmys and two Golden Globes for his portrayal of Eli Gold in The Good Wife. Off-screen, Cumming is also a writer and owns Club Cumming in New York, where he resides with his husband. Cumming sat down with Ian Horner to talk about his upcoming artistic direction of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival.

Cumming will be the first non-local, non-Australian to artistically direct the festival. He wishes to shine the spotlight back on Australia, saying “So many of my early experiences of cabaret was with and around Australians. I associate my kind of wit and humour and openness with the Australian spirit.”

The festival will prominently feature Australian acts, and opens with Adelaide Tonight With Bob Downe And Willsy.

Cumming says he is excited for the variety of performances debuting in the festival including Boobs, a show about a double mastectomy and L’Hotel, where the audience has dinner while artists perform around them.

The festival aims to celebrate cabaret. Cumming says, “that queerness, and openness, and sprinkling of glitter over everything is exactly what cabaret should do for people”.

In the interview, Horner and Cumming also discuss his cop show Instinct and his “intactivism” regarding circumcision.
