40 years of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and still breaking records, with an estimated 300,000 spectators, 200 floats and 12,300 participants the weekend’s parade has been the largest yet.

With the theme “40 years of evolution”, the annual parade was in honour of the group who marched in 1978, also known as the 78ers, the original brave men and women who fought for LGBT rights that were arrested and bashed by the police for demanding equality.

This year Cher was the party headline act, and surprised parade viewers by turning up on the parade route to walk alongside the QANTAS float with CEO Alan Joyce.
