Government funding has secured Mardi Gras' immediate financial future.

Government funding has secured Mardi Gras' immediate financial future.

After years of funding itself through sponsorship arrangements and party ticket sales, the Sydney Mardi Gras has finally secured financial assistance from the New South Wales state government.

POLL: Should taxpayers pay for Mardi Gras? VOTE!

Mardi Gras almost became a thing of the past six years ago when a voluntary administrator discovered organisers were trading while insolvent as they faced debts of $700,000.

Restructuring of the event in the past few years and this new one-year arrangement with the NSW government is set to put Mardi Gras back on the path to a bright future.

In a week where the NSW Premier has warned that the state's economic situation is dire and taxpayer-funded infrastructure projects are at risk, tabloid newspapers such as The Daily Telegraph are reporting that taxpayers are being "forced" to fund the gay event.

Events NSW chief executive Geoff Parmenter has said that the Mardi Gras injects $30 million into the state's economy each year and is a worthy investment.
