there are some hilarious american sitcoms/comedies and comedians... but yeah, generally the country and people as a whole take themselves to seriously.
What country needs hilarious comedies on TV when you've Sarah Palin' In Comparison as your vice prez candidate. Now that's funny!

Once again the Americans are getting all hung up over nothing. For any comedy to be funny someone has to be the stooge and have the piss taken out of them. It about time people in America lightened and had a good laugh at them selves like the rest of the world does (laughs at America that is). You only have to look at the fuss kicked up of Russell Brand at the MTV awards. Loads of people complained saying how dare you take the piss out of our President! This from a country who as taken the piss out of the Royal family for years. Lighten up Yanks, you’re not the most important people in the world, contrary to what you think.

Actually, a lot of us Americans have pretty good senses of humor and happen to love 'Little Britain'.
And some of us are even good about spotting hoaxes about "outraged" American gays when we see them:

(The suspcious-sounding "New York Gay Pride" organization "quoted" in the "article" was what tipped me off ; apparently the "West Hollywood Gay and Lesbian Alliance" doesn't exist either.)

Here in Canada, Little Britain has been on the TV for several years now.
I do watch it in parts because some elements are tiresome. The incontinent
woman or the woman who vomits are the two elements that--once seen--
pall in successive viewings.
The women in the fat suits tires also. Same can be said of Dafydd the
gay Welsh.
It's the same old characters being reworked ad nauseam.
That's why I don't really watch it anymore.
Wow. What an incredible generalization about Americans. There are lots of Americans who have a great sense of humor. But conversely, many of those of us who do also are overwhelmingly dismayed at the idiot we have in the White House, the loss of personal rights, the continued attack by the conservatives and religious evangelicals on gay Americans. What is it we're supposed to find so amusing????? But, in general, I LOVE Britcoms that are aired in the USA. Most are old and somewhat outdated, but they are incredibly funny. British humor tends to be much more bawdy and almost sophmoric........very broad and obvious. But yes, most (I think) Americans take ourselves too seriously, resent our current leadership, and are dismayed by the shift to the conservative right in American politics and social values.
