Photographer Jay Diers shares his behind-the-scenes illustrated diaries with DNAmagazine.com.au. This is the first installment of a regular series.

How do I start this? Hmm, I had such a great shoot, I don't even know where to begin.

Jim came up a little late as our 3 o'clock start time was a little early for this frat boy. When he showed up he had tons of clothes on hangers and a backpack full of the rest of the clothes and product sticking out the top.

He borrowed a fellow frat brother's car to come up here, which was appreciated. We jumped into my car and started to head towards our location which happened to be in the building in which i work.

On the way down i got to know him a little better and judging from his life so far, at the age of 22, he has lived quite a life. I look at myself at the age of 34 and think I haven't done much, even though I know I have. He hates smokers cause he is crazy in shape and I can understand why he would be bothered by such toxicity. So I didn't smoke the whole way down there.

So we arrived at the Cherry Building and we are already a bit behind schedule but no big deal, I tend to just roll with it, for it happens enough times that I gave up trying to start on time. We grabbed his clothes out of the trunk and we started into the building. We got onto the service elevator which was put in the same year the building was built (1892) so needless to say it makes me nervous every time I get on the thing. Once we reached the top we finished ascending to the top of the staircase in which we started our shoot.

At first, he was nervous, not knowing what to do so I just snapped some pics to start out. I really enjoy shooting models who have never really modeled before because a) they have no expectations and b) they don't have attitude. After shooting for awhile and me taking a smoke break on top of the roof we continued in the little stairwell in which we started this new adventure. By the time we were done in the stairwell we were very comfortable with each other and it made the rest of the shoot go smoothly.

We moved into the elevator in which we took it down to the basement to have a little more privacy. The lighting and textures in the elevator was more then expected and worth the time we spent in there shooting.

I ran out of film before we finished shooting everything we wanted to so I think we are going to finish the shoot this weekend in which I may show them or not. Not sure yet.

Wow - you can almost "feel" the difference between this shoot, and the ones with the street kids. This gut , as he says, takes great pride in himself, and that shows - as well as almost feeling the difference in what the guys have to prove.
Great shots..
