|| TRAINING TIP || ????Don't count your reps - make your reps count. Here's what I mean... Focussing on rep quantity during a workout can not only limit what you're capable of doing, it can actually reduce the quality of your reps. It's a simple trade-off. For example, if you have 10 reps in mind for an exercise but you're capable of doing 8 or 12, then you're either going to force out 2 extra poor quality reps, or you're going to stop 2 reps short of your capacity. Next time you do a workout try this... Start doing an exercise without counting, and focus purely on the mind-muscle connection. When you start to FEEL the tension in the desired muscle, concentrate on cloning that feeling without counting. Just simply recreate proper reps until your body can no longer maintain the same form and feeling. It requires mindfulness. This is a tool that I use from time to time in my training. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that you should never count a rep again, I'm simply saying that sometimes it's nice to take your brain out of it and let your body do the work! Exercise doesn't always have to be a mathematical equation. || R O U T I N E || I'm a huge proponent of finding a morning routine that sets you up for a good day. This used to be my morning routine ???? Why isn't it anymore? Because I rescued a dog. It's not about me any more. Dennis runs the home now. - I was talking to a good mate of mine the other day and he asked me a great question: "How has life changed since getting a dog?" My answer was simple. It has made me less rigid. I used to be so rigid in my routine. I would swim every single morning, regardless of the weather or the hour. I would do whatever I wanted - whenever I wanted. It was all about me. - Things are a little bit different now. My morning starts with a walk in the park rather than a swim in the ocean. I skip workouts to take him for a walk. Getting a dog has taught me responsibility, how to love, and it has put into perspective that the real things that matter in life are relationships with the people you care about...friends, family, partners, pets etc. I'm still striving to find the balance between selfishness and selflessness. || MAKE MOVEMENT YOUR MANTRA || On rest days - I play. Since being diagnosed with diabetes, I have made movement my mantra. When I'm not doing structured exercise in the gym or outdoors, I like to keep active in a variety of different ways. It's astounding how effectively I can control my blood sugar levels by moving in ways that I wouldn't even consider calling 'exercise'. Find ways to move more without even knowing that you're doing it: ?Play team sports - where the pace of the game dictates your exertion. ?Surf - where the wave speed and direction dictates how hard you have to paddle. ?Walk - as a form of commuting. ?Ride a bike - ditch the car for a day. ?Run - with your dog ????Physical benefits aside, moving our bodies is good for our entire biology. ????Give your body the gift of movement that it was designed to thrive on. - #exercise #play #surf #longboard #ocean #sea #coastalliving #sunshine #happy #healthyliving #health #wellness #sunnyday #summer #diabetes #type1diabetes #type1 #t1d #diabadass #bloodsugar #insulin #thrive #waves

|| E X E R C I S E vs I N S U L I N || ???? I take 2 kinds of medicine daily - exercise and insulin, with exercise being at the core. In other words, I factor in a daily dose of exercise every single day of my life which allows me to take less insulin. Exercise is just one pillar that leads to what I call a... ????'Low Insulin Lifestyle' In my opinion, the lower our insulin levels are over a lifetime - the better our overall health will be. All human beings, regardless of whether you have diabetes or insulin resistance should follow this way of living. Not only will this allow you to live optimally, but a nice byproduct of a 'Low Insulin Lifestyle' is that you will look and feel better than ever before. ???? || H A K U N A M A T A T A || It means no worries... I've always had a positive outlook on life, but not to the same extent that I do today. Sometimes we need a wake up call to teach us how to really live - diabetes was mine. It has given me an entirely different perspective on the world. It has opened my eyes and mind to how blessed we are to be able to do the simple things like splash around in the ocean on a sunny day. ? B A L A N C E ? Diabetes has taught me an array of valuable lessons in life, but there is one lesson that truly stands out amongst the rest... ????A healthy lifestyle is not about extremes or restrictions. It's not about how much will power you have. Its not about following a program or copying what others do, and it's certainly not about following the fads. It's simply about finding balance. I have tried many different lifestyle interventions over the past few years since diagnosis and the ones that were extreme, restrictive and painful, turned out to do some pretty significant damage to my health. - ????I used to think that if too much carbohydrate is bad then none must be better - I was wrong. ????I used to think that if some exercise is good then more must be better - I was wrong. ????I used to think that exercise had to be a painful grind or else it wasn't effective - I was wrong. ????I used to think that it was all about will power and mental fortitude - I was wrong. ????In fact too much will power and mental fortitude can get you into trouble, as it may cause you to ignore your intuition. Trust me. I fought my intuition for far too long and it didn't end well. - I'm not afraid to admit when I am wrong, especially if I am able to learn from it and grow. I have made many mistakes that, in hindsight, were so important for me to make in order to discover the things I know today. ????Your body will tell you everything you need to know about healthy living - listen to it ????Be intuitive ????Strive for balance - These days for me balance means getting a Daily Dose of 'The 5 Pillars'.
