Muslim 'Homophobe' Endorses Activist MP Candidate

Date: 26-Oct-2009

The times, they are a-changin'. British gay rights activist Peter Tatchell once accused Muslim journalist Adam Yoseff of "unabashed homophobia" and "xenophobia" after Yosef branded Tatchell an "Islamophobe" and urged violence against him. Today, Tatchell is a MP candidate, and Yosef is a staunch supporter.

Back in 2005, Tatchell urged the Desi Xpress to remove Yosef from his position there as columnist.

But sometimes good can come from these public spats. This spat gave rise to a searing debate within the Respect Party, with whom Yosef had a prior affiliation, on LGBT issues.

And it seems to have precipitated some deep soul-searching on the part of Tatchell and Yosef. In a statement endorsing Tatchell, Yosef proclaims a "spirit of solidarity" and calls on the left to "embrace a mutual personal and political commitment towards equality and human rights".
